REVIEW: Matthew Reilly - Temple

Before I start: If you haven't read this book, this review contains spoilers!

This is by far the most ridiculous book I've ever read. It centers around a young professor - William Race - who is the only one who can help some shady US government/military agency with the translation of an ancient document. Before William has any clue of what's happening, he's deep in the jungle of Peru and in trouble.

These are some of the reasons why I find the book ridiculous:
  • William is a scholar, a softie, but for some strange reason (of course, he's the hero) he is one of the few to survive, while whole special forces teams die, some in quite horrible ways.
  • The team William is a member of, is not only chased by a German team, a Nazi-team, but also by an other US government team (Navy or Army, I forgot). And everybody dies. The only good guys are the native Indians.
  • The action is way over the top. Example: William drops from a cargo plane in an Abraham tank! He manages to get outside, lock the bad guy inside and stay stafe, because he wears an experimental one-person helicopter-suit (or something like that). The tank crashes into the ground, and our dear William just hovers above. Right.
If you don't take this book and the action described in it serious, it's a fun read. In some way, you do want to know how it ends. But seriously, buy this book cheap, it's not worth a lot of money.
